When layoffs are announced, there is often a shared sense of shock, anger, fear, and deep concern about what comes next. The immediate response is to act - update your resumé, search job postings and call friends who might know of companies hiring. Do something – anything, to regain a sense of control.
And that can help, at least at first. It gives you something to hold onto.
But your life and your future are not the same as everyone else’s. What feels like a collective experience is, in reality, deeply personal.
One place to begin is simply this: What is your number one concern right now?
Taking the time to sit with that question and to talk it through with someone who will listen without directing - can begin to ease some of the uncertainty. Not by providing answers. But by allowing you to hear your own thinking more clearly.
Speaking out loud, in real time, with someone who isn’t part of your history, can create a different kind of clarity by asking questions that will guide you gently forward. You may begin to see options you hadn’t considered. Or recognize that something in your life is ready to change. What once felt like an ending may begin to look more like a turning point. A fork in the road.
And through thoughtful, unfiltered conversation, you can begin to explore what comes next - with a little more clarity, thinking of ideas and solutions that you might not have visited before and with a feeling of a little more sense of control.
A quiet thought…Sometimes, it’s not the answers that move us forward — but the space to think clearly enough to find our own.
